Rhetorical Analysis Reflection
1. Assignment Purpose
This rhetorical analysis belongs in a college writing course because it teaches students how to look closely at arguments and understand how authors persuade readers. This assignment helped me learn how to identify logos, ethos, and pathos and explain how they work in an article. It also helped me improve my writing and critical thinking skills. These are important skills that I can use in future college classes and in everyday life when I read articles or make my own arguments.
2. The Beginning
When I first started this assignment, I felt a little unsure. I understood what rhetorical appeals were, but I was not completely sure how to write a full analysis about them. The assignment directions were clear, but figuring out how to organize my ideas was challenging at first. Once I reread the article and started taking notes, I felt more confident.
3. Pacing and Challenges
I mostly stayed on pace with the class. Breaking the assignment into smaller parts helped me stay organized. The hardest part for me was explaining how the evidence supported Roose's argument instead of just summarizing the article. I also found it challenging to connect the article to the audience. To overcome these challenges, I reread the article and looked back at my class notes about rhetorical analysis.
4. Peer Review
Reading my partner's paper helped me see different ways to analyze the article. I noticed some ideas and examples that I had not thought about before. I suggested that my partner add more explanation to some of their points and make their analysis more detailed.
I couldn´t receive feedback because it was over 30 hours
5. Use of AI Tools
I used AI tools to help me brainstorm ideas and improve my writing. AI helped me understand some parts of the assignment better and gave me suggestions for making my explanations clearer.
I made sure that I still did my own thinking by reading the article myself and choosing my own evidence. AI helped me organize my ideas, but the analysis and opinions in the paper were my own.
One way AI helped me learn was by showing me different ways to explain rhetorical appeals. It helped me better understand how authors use persuasion.
The benefit of AI is that it can give quick feedback and help generate ideas. A drawback is that students could become too dependent on it if they are not careful. I think AI works best when it is used as a tool to support learning, not replace it.
6. Final Draft Reflection
I think my final draft is successful because it clearly explains why Kevin Roose's article should be published. I am proud of how I explained logos, ethos, and pathos using examples from the article. I also think my conclusion clearly explains my recommendation.
I still have room to grow as a writer. I could improve by making my analysis deeper and discussing opposing viewpoints more. Overall, I am happy with my final draft and feel that this assignment helped me become a stronger writer.
7. Publication
I published my final rhetorical analysis on my English portfolio page and added a button called "Click for Review" so readers can easily find it.
I also published Kevin Roose's article, "Don't Ban ChatGPT in Schools. Teach With It," near my reflection with a button linking to the article.
After publishing both pieces, I will let my professor know that my portfolio is complete and ready to be graded.
